Club Moss

Club Moss, botanically Selaginella kraussiana aurea, is a bright, vibrant green African plant with a moss-like growth habit and finely divided, spreading foliage that creates a lush, naturalistic ground covering in terrarium and paludarium environments. Not a true aquatic plant — Club Moss thrives in consistently humid but emersed conditions, growing naturally in the humid forest floors of Africa where moisture is constant but full submersion does not occur.

Care note: Club Moss is best grown in emersed or terrarium conditions with consistent humidity rather than fully submerged. Maintain temperatures of 65–75°F and a humid environment for healthy, vibrant growth.

Club Moss spreads gradually across moist substrate, creating a dense, carpet-like covering of bright green foliage that evokes tropical forest floor aesthetics. It is ideal for the emersed zones of paludariums, the humid rims of open-top aquariums, and terrarium setups. Regular light misting or consistent ambient humidity maintains healthy, vibrant growth. It does not tolerate or survive full aquatic submersion.

This easy plant grows in low to moderate lighting without CO₂ supplementation. Temperatures between 65 and 75°F and a pH of 6.0 to 7.0 provide comfortable conditions for this African species. The bright green foliage is most vivid under appropriate moderate indirect lighting — too much direct light can bleach the delicate foliage.

In the paludarium or terrarium, Club Moss creates a bright, lush ground covering that evokes tropical forest floor aesthetics. It pairs naturally with tropical ferns, small bromeliads, and other terrarium plants. The bright green color provides lively contrast alongside darker green plants and natural substrate.

Club Moss is a bright, easy-care terrarium and paludarium plant for aquarists who maintain humid vivarium environments. Its moss-like growth, vibrant green color, and African botanical character make it a practical and attractive ground covering for any humid tropical terrarium setup.
