Bucephalandra Red Central
Bucephalandra Red Central
Bucephalandra Red Central is a striking variety whose defining feature is a deep red midrib that runs through the center of its narrow leaves like a bold brushstroke, creating a dramatic color accent within each individual leaf. This combination of narrow leaf form and central red coloration gives Red Central a unique graphic quality — a plant that creates visual impact through precise botanical detail rather than overall color saturation.
Planting tip: Bucephalandra Red Central can be planted with the rhizome resting at the substrate surface, or attached to driftwood, rock, or other hardscape at any position in the aquarium. Never fully bury the rhizome under substrate, as this will cause rot. If attaching to hardscape, use cotton thread or aquarium-safe adhesive to secure it, and the plant will anchor itself naturally over time.
Like all Bucephalandra from Indonesia, Red Central can be planted with the rhizome resting at the substrate surface or attached to hardscape at any position in the aquarium. Never fully bury the rhizome. This moderate-difficulty variety grows well in low to moderate lighting with optional CO₂ supplementation. Temperatures between 72 and 82°F and a pH range of 6.0 to 7.2 suit this plant well. Like all Bucephalandra, Red Central can produce small, delicate white flowers both underwater and above the waterline.
Growing to 1 to 3 inches, Red Central is a compact foreground and hardscape accent plant. Regular liquid fertilization, particularly with iron-containing formulas, supports the depth and vibrancy of the red midrib that makes this variety distinctive. The deep red midrib is noted in the chart as making it great for center hardscape focal points — a characterization that perfectly suits its graphic, centrally-focused leaf design.
In the aquascape, a single specimen or small group on a prominent piece of driftwood or stone draws the eye with the visual rhythm of the red midrib repeated across multiple narrow leaves. The warm red midrib tones pair beautifully with cool blue-green plants and create a natural color conversation with reddish stem plants in the background.
Bucephalandra Red Central is a precision plant for aquarists who appreciate botanical detail. Its unique leaf design and targeted red coloring make it one of the most graphically interesting Bucephalandra varieties in the hobby.
