Bucephalandra Pygmy
Bucephalandra Pygmy
Bucephalandra Pygmy is one of the smallest Bucephalandra varieties available, growing to just 0.5 to 1 inch in height — a truly miniature plant that pushes the boundaries of scale in planted aquarium design. At this tiny size, Pygmy is perfectly suited for the most detailed foreground work, nano aquascapes, and paludariums where plant scale is critical to the success of the composition.
Planting tip: Bucephalandra Pygmy can be planted with the rhizome resting at the substrate surface, or attached to driftwood, rock, or other hardscape at any position in the aquarium. Never fully bury the rhizome under substrate, as this will cause rot. If attaching to hardscape, use cotton thread or aquarium-safe adhesive to secure it, and the plant will anchor itself naturally over time.
As a Bornean species from Indonesia, Pygmy can be planted with the rhizome resting at the substrate surface or attached to hardscape at any position in the aquarium. Never fully bury the rhizome. This moderate-difficulty variety grows well in low to moderate lighting with optional CO₂ supplementation. Temperatures between 72 and 82°F and a pH of 6.0 to 7.2 suit this plant well. Like all Bucephalandra, Pygmy can produce small, delicate white flowers both underwater and above the waterline — the flowers appearing particularly large and striking relative to the tiny size of this plant.
Consistent liquid fertilization supports healthy growth at this miniature scale. Patience is rewarded — slow growth at a tiny scale means this plant develops precisely and holds its form with exceptional reliability over time.
In the aquascape, Bucephalandra Pygmy excels in nano tanks where it can serve as a full-sized foreground plant relative to the layout's scale. In larger tanks it is used for extraordinarily fine foreground detail work on small pebbles and detailed stone arrangements. Dwarf shrimp are particularly fond of Pygmy, whose tiny scale and textured leaves provide ideal grazing and sheltering environments.
Bucephalandra Pygmy is the ultimate miniature — a plant that delivers the full beauty and character of the Bucephalandra genus in an impossibly small package. For nano tanks and detailed scapes, it is irreplaceable.
