Bucephalandra dark velvet
Bucephalandra dark velvet
Bucephalandra dark velvet is a refined moderate-difficulty variety whose deeply textured, dark leaves combine the velvety surface quality of the velvet-type Bucephalandra with a notably darker, more moody coloration. The dark, textured leaves attached to hardscape create a sophisticated, brooding presence in the aquascape — a plant of understated drama that rewards careful observation with increasing depth and complexity.
Planting tip: Bucephalandra dark velvet can be planted with the rhizome resting at the substrate surface, or attached to driftwood, rock, or other hardscape at any position in the aquarium. Never fully bury the rhizome under substrate, as this will cause rot. If attaching to hardscape, use cotton thread or aquarium-safe adhesive to secure it, and the plant will anchor itself naturally over time.
Like all Bucephalandra from Indonesia, dark velvet can be planted with the rhizome resting at the substrate surface or attached to hardscape at any position in the aquarium. Never fully bury the rhizome. This variety benefits from medium lighting with optional CO₂ supplementation to maintain the dark, textured quality of the leaves. Temperatures between 72 and 82°F and a pH of 6.0 to 7.5 provide comfortable conditions. Like all Bucephalandra, dark velvet can produce small, delicate white flowers both underwater and above the waterline.
Growing to 2 to 4 inches, dark velvet is suited to foreground to midground placement on featured hardscape. Regular liquid fertilization supports healthy leaf production and the maintenance of the dark, velvety leaf quality. Good water circulation helps keep the textured leaf surface clean and healthy.
In the aquascape, Bucephalandra dark velvet is most effective as a moody foreground accent on dark stone or textured driftwood where its dark, textured leaves deepen the atmosphere of the composition. It pairs naturally with brighter, lighter-colored plants where the dark velvet quality creates maximum contrast. Shrimp appreciate the textured leaf surface for grazing.
Bucephalandra dark velvet is a plant of sophisticated, darkly beautiful character. Its textured leaves, moderate care requirements, and refined appearance make it a rewarding variety for serious aquascapers.
