Bucephalandra centipede
Bucephalandra centipede
Bucephalandra centipede is one of the most texturally unique plants in the freshwater hobby, featuring a wavy leaf structure whose undulating margins have been compared to the legs of a centipede — an unusual and memorable botanical form that creates extraordinary fine detail when used on driftwood or detailed rock compositions. This distinctive leaf shape makes centipede a true specialty plant for aquascapers who prioritize fine-scale visual interest and organic texture.
Planting tip: Bucephalandra centipede can be planted with the rhizome resting at the substrate surface, or attached to driftwood, rock, or other hardscape at any position in the aquarium. Never fully bury the rhizome under substrate, as this will cause rot. If attaching to hardscape, use cotton thread or aquarium-safe adhesive to secure it, and the plant will anchor itself naturally over time.
As a Bornean species from Indonesia, centipede can be planted with the rhizome resting at the substrate surface or attached to hardscape at any height in the aquarium. Never fully bury the rhizome. This moderate-difficulty variety grows best in low to moderate lighting with optional CO₂ supplementation. Temperatures between 72 and 82°F and a pH of 6.0 to 7.2 suit this plant well. Like all Bucephalandra, centipede can produce small, delicate white flowers both underwater and above the waterline.
Centipede grows to 1 to 3 inches in height. Its primary value in the aquascape is textural, making it best used for fine detailing on driftwood where the wavy, multi-lobed leaf margins can be appreciated up close. Regular liquid fertilization supports healthy leaf production and maintains the distinctive leaf structure.
In the aquascape, Bucephalandra centipede is a specialist plant — best used as a precise accent element on detailed hardscape where its unusual leaf form can be observed and appreciated. Nano tanks are a natural home for centipede, where the intricate leaf structure can dominate the visual composition at close viewing range.
Bucephalandra centipede is a uniquely structured plant for aquarists who love botanical detail and organic complexity. Nothing else in the freshwater hobby quite matches its distinctive leaf form.
