Bucephalandra Catherinae
Bucephalandra Catherinae
Bucephalandra Catherinae is a tiny, compact variety from the Catherinae group of Bucephalandra that produces miniature leaves with a distinctive blue shimmer — combining the precision and scale of the smallest Bucephalandra with a cool, metallic color quality that makes it one of the most refined collector's varieties in the genus. Its very slow growth rate and miniature form make it a plant of extraordinary longevity and stable presence in the aquascape.
Planting tip: Bucephalandra Catherinae can be planted with the rhizome resting at the substrate surface, or attached to driftwood, rock, or other hardscape at any position in the aquarium. Never fully bury the rhizome under substrate, as this will cause rot. If attaching to hardscape, use cotton thread or aquarium-safe adhesive to secure it, and the plant will anchor itself naturally over time.
As a Bornean Bucephalandra from Indonesia, Catherinae can be planted with the rhizome resting at the substrate surface or attached to hardscape at any position in the aquarium. Never fully bury the rhizome. It is rated moderate in difficulty and grows without requiring CO₂ supplementation under low to moderate lighting. Temperatures between 72 and 82°F and a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5 provide ideal conditions. Like all Bucephalandra, Catherinae can produce small, delicate white flowers both underwater and above the waterline.
Growing to just 1 to 2 inches, Catherinae is among the smallest and slowest-growing Bucephalandra available. This extreme slow growth rate is a practical advantage in detailed aquascape compositions — the plant holds its precise position and compact form almost indefinitely.
In the aquascape, Bucephalandra Catherinae is best displayed in nano tanks or as a precision foreground accent in larger layouts where its blue shimmer can be appreciated up close. Grouping several Catherinae specimens — including the Red and Dark Carpet varieties — creates an extraordinary miniature collection display of botanical variety at the smallest scale.
Bucephalandra Catherinae is a miniature gem of exceptional refinement. Small, slow, blue, and absolutely beautiful.
