Bucephalandra brownie 'Purple'
Bucephalandra brownie 'Purple'
Bucephalandra brownie 'Purple' is a small rhizome plant from the popular brownie group of Bucephalandra, developing deep purple hues in its compact leaves under higher light conditions. The characteristic brownie group coloration reaches its most dramatic expression in the Purple variety, creating a plant that can shift from subtle green-brown under low light to a genuinely vivid purple under moderate to strong illumination.
Planting tip: Bucephalandra brownie 'Purple' can be planted with the rhizome resting at the substrate surface, or attached to driftwood, rock, or other hardscape at any position in the aquarium. Never fully bury the rhizome under substrate, as this will cause rot. If attaching to hardscape, use cotton thread or aquarium-safe adhesive to secure it, and the plant will anchor itself naturally over time.
As a Bornean Bucephalandra from Indonesia, Purple can be planted with the rhizome resting at the substrate surface or attached to rock or wood at any position in the aquarium. Never fully bury the rhizome. This easy-care variety grows well in low to moderate lighting without CO₂ supplementation. Temperatures between 72 and 82°F and a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5 provide comfortable conditions. Like all Bucephalandra, brownie 'Purple' can produce small, delicate white flowers both underwater and above the waterline.
Growing to 1 to 2 inches, Purple is compact and suited to foreground hardscape placement. The intensity of the purple color is directly influenced by light level — providing moderate to higher light will unlock the richest purple expression in the leaves.
In the aquascape, Bucephalandra brownie 'Purple' provides warm foreground color that is particularly effective alongside blue-green plants and cool-toned hardscape, where the warm purple creates a natural complementary color relationship. In collections featuring multiple brownie-type Bucephalandra, Purple provides the most dramatic color expression and naturally becomes the focal point of the group.
Bucephalandra brownie 'Purple' is a small plant with a big color personality. Its light-responsive deep purple coloration and classic Bucephalandra ease of care make it a rewarding and beautiful addition to any planted aquarium.
