Blue Spotted Corydoras (Corydoras melanistius) is one of the most distinctively patterned corydoras available in the hobby — a pearly white body densely covered in dark spots of varying sizes, with a dramatically black dorsal fin that gives the species its alternative common name, the Black Sail Corydoras. The species epithet melanistius literally means "black sail," a direct reference to this striking dorsal fin. The spotted pattern varies in intensity between individuals and provides effective camouflage among the leaf litter of the coastal river systems of northeastern South America — Brazil, French Guiana, Guyana, and Suriname — where this species is native.

Native to coastal river systems of northeastern South America, C. melanistius inhabits a range of water conditions from slightly acidic to neutral — one of the more adaptable corydoras in terms of water chemistry, tolerating pH 6.0–8.0 and a range of hardness levels. Fine sand substrate is nonetheless essential, as the delicate barbels this species uses to forage through the substrate are easily damaged by coarse gravel or rough materials. Dense planting, driftwood, and shaded retreats are appreciated.
Keep in groups of at least six — Corydoras are social schooling fish that are visibly healthier, bolder, and more active in proper groups. In groups, Blue Spotted Corydoras forage actively across the substrate together, creating constant movement and activity in the lower levels of the aquarium. Completely peaceful with all community fish — an excellent choice for planted community aquariums alongside tetras, rasboras, dwarf cichlids, and other corydoras species.
C. melanistius is hardy and adaptable compared to many wild-caught corydoras, making it a good choice for aquarists who want the beauty of a spotted cory without the demanding water chemistry requirements of some rarer species. A striking and underrated fish that tends to sell quickly when available.
