Blue Borneo Sucker Fish
Blue Borneo Sucker Fish (Gastromyzon aeroides) is one of the most visually striking hillstream loaches available in the aquarium hobby — and one of the rarest. The species name aeroides comes from the Latin word for "sky-blue," a direct reference to the vivid blue coloration of the dorsal, anal, and caudal fins that distinguishes this species from all other Gastromyzon. The body itself is patterned in warm brown and cream tones with intricate reticulations, while the electric blue finnage creates an extraordinary contrast that makes this fish instantly recognizable. Native to fast-flowing hill streams in western Sabah (Malaysian Borneo) and the Temburong River basin of Brunei Darussalam — pristine, oxygen-rich, clear-water environments with smooth rock substrate and strong current.
Feeding & Care Tip: Repashy Bottom Scratcher gel food applied directly to rocks is the gold standard for hillstream loaches — it closely mimics the biofilm they graze on in the wild. Supplement with Hikari Algae Wafers and occasional Hikari Frozen Bloodworms for protein. This species is a dedicated biofilm and algae grazer; a well-established tank with good rock surface growth is essential before adding these fish.
Like all hillstream loaches, G. aeroides requires excellent water quality, high dissolved oxygen, and significant water movement — conditions that mirror the fast-flowing hill streams of Borneo. A powerhead or wavemaker creating strong surface agitation, along with fine mechanical filtration to keep the water crystal clear, will keep this species thriving. Smooth river rocks, slate, or similar flat stone surfaces give these fish the grazing habitat they need. Water temperature should be kept cool — this is a highland Borneo species accustomed to temperatures well below typical tropical aquarium ranges.
The flattened, disc-like body and modified pelvic fins form a powerful suction cup that allows G. aeroides to cling to smooth rock faces against strong current — the same adaptation that lets wild specimens hold position in torrential mountain streams. Completely peaceful with all tankmates and safe with shrimp. Best kept in groups of three or more, as solitary individuals tend to be more reclusive. An ideal centerpiece species for high-flow planted aquascapes and river-style biotope setups.
Gastromyzon aeroides is virtually never available in US aquarium stores — this is a genuine collector's fish that serious planted tank and hillstream enthusiasts actively seek out. Wild-caught specimens from Borneo; captive breeding is essentially undocumented in the hobby.
