Black Line Pipefish

Black Line Pipefish (Doryichthys martensii) is a genuinely extraordinary freshwater fish — a pipefish, related to seahorses, living in freshwater rivers of Southeast Asia. The slender, rigid body is pale with a bold dark midlateral stripe running the full length. Like seahorses, the male broods the eggs. Freshwater pipefish are members of the family Syngnathidae — the same family as seahorses and marine pipefish. Their presence in freshwater is a remarkable evolutionary story, and their care requirements reflect their specialist biology.

Feeding & Care Tip: Live baby brine shrimp, live Daphnia, live Moina, and copepods are the most reliable foods. Some individuals adapt to frozen baby brine shrimp with patience, but live foods should be considered a requirement. Feed multiple small amounts throughout the day — pipefish have tiny mouths and continuous feeding needs.

Live Food Requirement: Both freshwater pipefish species are micro-predators that require live or very fresh frozen micro-foods to thrive. Newly-hatched live baby brine shrimp, live Daphnia, live Moina, and copepods are the most reliable foods. Some individuals may adapt to frozen baby brine shrimp over time, but live foods should be considered a requirement for long-term success with these specialist fish.

Freshwater pipefish require a species-specific or near-species-specific setup with gentle filtration, dense planting, and an abundant supply of live micro-foods. They cannot compete with any other fish for food. A mature aquarium with established micro-fauna in the substrate and water column is strongly beneficial.

Keep as a pair or small group, species-only. Any active tankmates will outcompete pipefish for food. The male broods the eggs in a brood pouch, releasing tiny, fully-formed fry.

Freshwater pipefish are among the most challenging but extraordinary fish available. For aquarists who can provide the live food supply they need, they are incomparable.
