Begonia Goegoensis, commonly called the Fire-King Begonia, is native to Goego, Sumatra, and has been in Western cultivation since 1882, when it was exhibited by Veitch and Sons and received a First Class Certificate from the Royal Horticultural Society. It's a rhizomatous species grown for its rounded, peltate leaves — bronze-green with a quilted, bullate texture and pale, spiderweb-like veining, with a deep red underside.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: This species has shallow roots and hates wet feet — use a fast-draining, porous mix and let the top half-inch dry before watering again.
Give it bright but indirect light — direct sun will scorch the leaves quickly — along with high humidity around 70%, making it a natural fit for a terrarium or enclosed growing space. It's a moderate grower, somewhat slow to root compared to other Begonia, but can eventually reach a substantial 2 feet tall with excellent care. Small white to rose-pink flowers appear intermittently through summer and fall, though the foliage remains the main attraction.
A genuine 19th-century collector's classic that's remained in cultivation for well over a century — proof that the best rhizomatous Begonia foliage never really goes out of style.
