Barclaya Motleyi is a rare rosette-forming aquatic plant from the blackwater streams and swamp forests of Borneo, Sumatra, Peninsular Malaysia, Thailand, and Papua New Guinea. Named for the 19th-century botanist James Motley, it is one of only two Barclaya species grown in the aquarium hobby, and by far the more demanding of the two. Its broad, undulating leaves range from reddish-brown to green and are borne close to the substrate, giving it a very different, low-slung silhouette from the more commonly seen Barclaya longifolia.
Care tip: Barclaya Motleyi is a genuinely advanced plant, not a beginner Barclaya. In nature it grows in very soft, acidic, still blackwater over a deep, nutrient-rich substrate, and it does not adapt well to hard or fast-moving water. This is a plant for experienced keepers with soft-water setups.
This species wants a deep, mineral-rich substrate — a layer of decomposing leaf litter beneath aquasoil closely mimics its natural swamp-forest floor. Water should be soft and acidic, with very little flow; still or slow-moving water is essential, as Barclaya Motleyi does not tolerate strong current. Like its relative B. longifolia, it grows from a rhizome and can enter periodic dormancy, shedding leaves and resting before sending up new growth — this is a normal part of its life cycle, not a sign of failure.
In the aquascape, Barclaya Motleyi is best used as a specimen midground plant in a soft-water, low-light blackwater or biotope-style tank, where its low rosette of undulating red-brown leaves provides a striking natural contrast to taller stems and hardscape. It pairs naturally with other soft-water Bornean species such as Cryptocoryne and Bucephalandra, and with driftwood-heavy, tannin-stained aquascapes.
Barclaya Motleyi remains genuinely rare in the aquarium trade compared to B. longifolia, and its narrow water-chemistry tolerance is the reason — it simply does not thrive outside soft, acidic, still water. For the right collector with a properly set up blackwater tank, it is a distinctive and rewarding rarity.
