Aponogeton Boivinianus
Aponogeton Boivinianus
Aponogeton Boivinianus is an impressive large bulb plant from Madagascar producing long, ruffled green leaves with a distinctive, heavily crinkled surface that creates bold, dramatic presence in the background of larger aquariums. The pronounced ruffling and large leaf size make this one of the most visually imposing of the Aponogeton species, and a mature, well-grown specimen becomes one of the most striking background plants in the hobby.
Care tip: Aponogeton Boivinianus grows best in moderate to high lighting with CO₂ optional. Maintain temperatures of 72–82°F and pH 6.5–7.5. Regular liquid fertilization supports healthy growth and best coloration.
Growing to 20 to 28 inches, Aponogeton Boivinianus is a large background plant best suited to aquariums of 50 gallons or more where its impressive size can be fully appreciated without overwhelming the layout. Like all Aponogeton bulb plants, it undergoes periodic dormancy phases as noted in the care chart — these rest periods are natural and the plant returns with fresh growth, often larger and more ruffled than before.
This moderate plant grows under medium to high lighting without requiring CO₂ supplementation, though enriched conditions produce more vigorous growth and larger leaves. Temperatures between 72 and 82°F and a pH of 6.5 to 7.5 suit this Madagascar species well. A nutrient-rich substrate or regular root tabs support the bulb and the production of the large, ruffled leaves. Good water circulation prevents debris from accumulating in the deep leaf ruffles.
In the aquascape, Aponogeton Boivinianus creates a commanding, ruffled background presence that anchors the rear zone of larger aquariums with botanical authority. The heavily textured leaves create visual depth and contrast naturally with fine-leaved stem plants and smooth-leaved foreground species. In Madagascar biotope setups it is an authentically appropriate background plant of considerable natural grandeur.
Aponogeton Boivinianus is a magnificent background plant for aquarists with the space to appreciate its full potential. Its large, dramatically ruffled leaves make it one of the most impressive Aponogeton species and a genuinely rewarding long-term aquarium plant.
