Apistogramma elizabethae — known in the hobby as Elizabeth's Apisto or Elizabeth's Dwarf Cichlid — is one of the most vividly colored members of the genus. Mature males develop deep red flanks overlaid with iridescent blue speckling and carry extended, filamentous rays on the dorsal and caudal fins, making a well-conditioned male one of the true showpieces among dwarf cichlids. The species is native to blackwater tributaries of the upper Rio Negro basin in Brazil, one of the most acidic and heavily tannin-stained river systems in the Amazon.
Feeding & Care Tip: Always soak Hikari Micro Pellets in a small cup of tank water for 30–60 seconds before feeding — Apistogrammas can be prone to bloat from dry foods expanding in the gut. Hikari Vibra Bites are an excellent treat option; the sinking worm-like shape triggers the natural hunting instinct of these micro-predators and they will snap them up eagerly. Color is most vivid in soft, strongly acidic water with dark substrate and Indian almond leaves — the tannins both soften the water and provide the dimly lit, leaf-litter conditions where this species feels most secure. For breeding conditioning, Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Tubifex Worms fed 2–3 times per week reliably trigger spawning behavior and improve egg quality.
In the wild this species inhabits slow, heavily shaded forest streams with soft, strongly acidic blackwater and thick accumulations of leaf litter — conditions shared with many of the classic Rio Negro blackwater fish. Compared to some of the more widespread Apistogramma species, A. elizabethae is somewhat less commonly available and is considered a step up in both color and price by dwarf cichlid enthusiasts, though its care requirements are broadly similar to other Rio Negro Apistogramma.
Keep one male with two or more females for the best results and to spread out his attention. Males can be more assertive toward conspecifics and tankmates than some of the milder Apistogramma species, so provide plenty of sight-breaks with plants, driftwood, and leaf litter. Peaceful with unrelated, appropriately sized community fish such as small tetras, pencilfish, and Corydoras.
Apistogramma elizabethae is a cave-spawning dwarf cichlid. The female takes on essentially all parental duties, guarding the eggs and fry aggressively while her body darkens and takes on a warning coloration. Males should be watched during this period, as females may drive them off to protect the brood — dense planting and multiple caves help defuse tension. Coconut caves, clay pots, or driftwood crevices all make suitable spawning sites. Fry are tiny at first and need infusoria or freshly hatched baby brine shrimp for their first meals.
