Anubias heterophylla 'Lanceolata'
Anubias heterophylla 'Lanceolata'
Anubias heterophylla Lanceolata is a selected form of Anubias heterophylla distinguished by particularly lance-shaped leaves that create a more slender, architectural presence. Growing to 10 to 16 inches, the chart describes it as a tall Anubias with lance-shaped leaves excellent for larger tanks. This combination of height and narrow leaf form gives it a graceful, flowing quality that sets it apart from the broader-leaved standard heterophylla form.
Planting tip: Never bury the rhizome in substrate — Anubias heterophylla 'Lanceolata' should always be attached to driftwood, rock, or other hardscape with the rhizome fully exposed. Use cotton thread or aquarium-safe adhesive to secure it, and the plant will anchor itself naturally over time.
In terms of care, Anubias heterophylla Lanceolata shares the same requirements as other large Anubias species. Low lighting is sufficient, CO₂ supplementation is not required, and the plant grows comfortably in temperatures between 72 and 82°F with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5. Regular liquid fertilization supports the production of full, healthy lanceolate leaves. Good water circulation around the large leaves helps maintain their clean, healthy appearance.
The rhizome must remain above the substrate and should be attached to substantial driftwood or rock formations. The elongated leaf form is best displayed when the plant is positioned on vertical or angled hardscape where the long leaves can spread and flow naturally.
In the aquascape, Anubias heterophylla Lanceolata contributes elegant, architectural lines that complement the bold structures found in larger planted tanks. Its long leaves create flowing movement and contrast effectively with rounder-leaved plants and compact foreground species. In West African biotope tanks, it is an appropriate and striking species addition. A sophisticated large-format plant that rewards careful placement and patient cultivation.
