Acorus Variegatus (Acorus gramineus 'Variegatus'), also called variegated sweet flag, is a grassy, clump-forming perennial from East Asia grown for its narrow, arching green leaves striped with creamy white or yellow variegation. It is sometimes sold as an aquarium plant, but it is not a true aquatic — we're carrying it as the terrarium and paludarium plant it actually thrives as.
Care tip: Acorus Variegatus is a marginal/terrarium plant, not a true submerged aquatic — it can tolerate short stays underwater but will decline with long-term full submersion. Grow it emersed, with roots moist but the crown above the waterline.
This plant does best in consistently moist, well-drained soil with medium to bright light — it is genuinely low-maintenance once established, with a slow growth rate and minimal need for pruning beyond tidying up spent leaves. It tolerates a wide pH range and a broad temperature range typical of terrarium and paludarium setups.
In a paludarium or terrarium, Acorus Variegatus provides upright, grassy texture and eye-catching green-and-white variegation that contrasts well against broader-leaved terrarium plants and mosses. It works especially well along the damp margins of a paludarium's land area or as a potted accent near the waterline.
