Description

Nautilus Light Riverbed is inspired by the pale, mineral-rich lakebeds of Lake Malawi, Africa, and the karst streams of Bonito, Brazil — a delicate blend of pale sands and light-colored crushed shells and whole shell fragments that recreates the authentic bright, luminous character of clear alkaline waters with genuine natural realism.

The pale cream and soft beige tones of the substrate create a bright, high-contrast foundation that makes colorful fish, invertebrates, and aquatic plants stand out vividly. The varied shell fragments — from tiny spiral gastropods to larger flat pieces — add intricate natural texture and depth to the substrate surface. The mix is lighter and more varied in shell character than Nautilus Tan, with a cooler, more neutral palette that evokes shallow clear-water lake margins and pristine karst stream beds.

Nautilus Light Riverbed will raise pH and hardness, making it particularly well-suited for alkaline biotopes, shell-dwelling cichlids, and species from clear, mineral-rich water environments.

Usage

  • Pre-washed: Ready to use, though additional rinsing can be done to ensure cleanliness
  • Riverbed Placement: Spread the substrate evenly along the bottom of your empty tank or terrarium; pour gently from a low height to avoid scratching the aquarium glass
  • Standalone or Mixed: Use on its own for a natural base, or combine with other WIO sands and gravels for a custom substrate look
  • Decorate & Plant: Arrange rocks, driftwood, and plants to create a harmonious and captivating environment
  • Filling the Tank: Pour water carefully, avoiding direct flow onto the substrate — Pro Tip: pour over a plate or décor to minimize disturbance
  • Final Touch: Use a net to skim any floating particles, then turn on the filter and watch the remaining cloudiness disappear within a few hours, leaving a clear, natural finish
  • Easy Maintenance: With every water change, gently vacuum the substrate to remove any accumulated debris or algae
