Broad Leaf Watersprite

Broad Leaf Watersprite, botanically Ceratopteris cornuta, is a fast-growing aquatic fern with markedly wider, more boldly lobed fronds than the finely divided standard watersprite (C. thalictroides). Native to tropical regions across Africa, Asia, and beyond, it has been in the aquarium hobby for well over a century and remains one of the most versatile and useful plants available — capable of growing planted in substrate, floating freely at the surface, or even attached loosely to hardscape. The broad, paddle-like frond lobes give this form a distinctly different and bolder visual character compared to its lacy-leaved relative.

Care tip: Do not bury the crown — the central growing point must remain above the substrate at all times or the plant will rot. If planting in substrate, push only the roots in; if floating, simply release it at the surface. New fronds will grow from the centre regardless of placement.

Broad Leaf Watersprite is extremely undemanding and well suited to a wide range of aquarium conditions. It thrives in moderate to high light but will grow, albeit more slowly, under lower light levels as well. CO₂ supplementation is not required and is generally unnecessary given the plant’s already rapid natural growth rate. It absorbs nutrients primarily through its fronds rather than its roots, so substrate quality is not critical — rich soil will help but plain gravel works fine. The key planting rule: do not bury the crown. Keep the growing point where new fronds emerge above the substrate surface at all times. As a floating plant it requires no planting at all and will form hanging root curtains that small fish and fry shelter in eagerly.

In the aquascape, Broad Leaf Watersprite is most effective as a background plant in medium to large aquariums, where its bold rosette creates strong visual mass. As a floating plant it provides natural surface shading and excellent fry cover — it is a classic choice for breeding tanks and labyrinth fish setups, where bubble nest builders actively incorporate its fronds. The plant propagates prolifically by producing adventitious plantlets along the margins of older fronds. These detach naturally and grow on independently, or can be gently removed once small roots are visible. Growth rate under good conditions is rapid enough that regular thinning will be needed.

Note that the taxonomy of broad-leaved watersprite is genuinely complex: C. cornuta has been treated by various botanists as a synonym of C. thalictroides, and the two are essentially distinguished in the aquarium hobby by leaf lobe width rather than any firmly agreed scientific boundary. What matters practically is that this broader-lobed form tolerates harder water somewhat better than the fine-leaved type and produces the same prolific plantlet propagation.
