Its species name, "tailed," likely refers to an elongated feature of its inflorescence or leaf tip. Unlike most sedges, which tend toward grassy, sun-loving habitats, Mapania are true forest-floor understory plants, forming clumps of long, strap-shaped, glossy leaves — a genuinely different look from the typical grass-like sedge silhouette.
