Description

Codonoboea Pumila Sumatra

Codonoboea Pumila was first described by Ridley as Didymocarpus pumilus in 1905, later reclassified through Henckelia before settling into its current name under botanist C.L. Lim. Its core range centers on Peninsular Malaysia, though it belongs to Codonoboea, a genus spanning from Thailand across the wider Malesian region into Sumatra — this specimen was collected from Sumatra, Indonesia, within that broader range. Its species name, "pumila" (dwarf), describes its compact, low-growing subshrub habit.

Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a mature reference specimen; your bare-root plant will typically be smaller.

Care tip: Like most Gesneriaceae, this species dislikes water sitting on its leaves — water the substrate directly rather than misting the foliage, and give it good airflow to prevent fungal spotting.

Give it bright, indirect light, a light, well-draining substrate, and consistent moisture without waterlogging. As a genuinely compact subshrub, it stays small and manageable, making it a good fit for terrarium or vivarium culture where its size can be appreciated up close. Like its Codonoboea relatives, it's confined to primary forest habitat in the wild — never limestone or aquatic sites — occurring on granite, sandstone, and quartz-derived soils and rocks from the lowlands into the highlands.

Like its relative Codonoboea dentata, this species carries a genuinely tangled taxonomic history — passed through three different genus names over the course of a century before settling into its current classification, a small window into just how actively Southeast Asian Gesneriaceae taxonomy continues to be revised.
