Calathea Peacock

Calathea Peacock is a Calathea grown in the trade under this name, its foliage patterning reminiscent of a peacock's iridescent display. It belongs to Calathea, part of the "prayer plant" family (Marantaceae) — a group of roughly 31 genera native to the tropical Americas and Africa, named for the way their leaves rise at night and lower again by day, a movement called nyctinasty.

Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.

Care tip: Calathea are notoriously sensitive to tap water minerals and chlorine — use filtered or distilled water where possible to avoid crispy brown leaf edges.

Give it medium to bright indirect light, consistently moist (never soggy) soil, and high humidity — dry air is the most common cause of frustration with this genus. A well-draining, peaty mix and grouping several humidity-loving plants together can help maintain the moisture level this species wants.
