Bakoa Lucens is native to Bako National Park in northwest Sarawak, Borneo, and is the type species of Bakoa, a genus described only in 2008 by Boyce and Wong after the plant had spent years shuffled between other genus names (first Hottarum, then Piptospatha) before its true, distinct identity was recognized. It's a genuine "xerorheophyte" — growing lithophytically on exposed sandstone that sits bone-dry during the dry season but becomes an active waterfall once the rains return, a remarkable dual-season adaptation.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: Unlike most true rheophytes that need constant wetness, this species is genuinely adapted to a seasonal wet-dry cycle — some tolerance for drier spells between thorough waterings is appropriate here.
Give it bright, filtered light, a mineral, fast-draining substrate mimicking bare sandstone, and water thoroughly, allowing some drying between waterings rather than keeping it constantly saturated like most stream-aroid relatives. Warm, humid conditions reflecting its lowland Bornean habitat suit it well.
A genuine taxonomic rarity — Bakoa remains a genus with just a small handful of known species, all endemic to Borneo, and this species' entire known population sits within a single, well-studied national park, making it a real piece of documented Bornean aroid diversity.
