Rosy Loach

Rosy Loach (Physoschistura mango) is one of the most remarkable nano fish in the freshwater hobby — under 1.2 inches fully grown, diurnal, boldly colored, and with a fascinating social dynamic that keeps an entire school constantly active and visible. Males flush vivid rosy-pink to red-orange when competing or displaying — in a well-conditioned group, that color is extraordinary for a fish of this size. The Rosy Loach has had a remarkable taxonomic journey: first imported in 2006 under the fictitious name Tuberoschistura arakanensis, later traded as Yunnanilus sp. 'rosy,' then assigned to Petruichthys, before being formally described and placed in Physoschistura in 2023.

Feeding & Care Tip: Hikari Micro Pellets crushed or soaked and Sera Vipan Baby make excellent daily staples. Supplement 2–3× per week with Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Baby Brine Shrimp and Hikari Frozen Daphnia. Feed small amounts multiple times daily.

Native to shallow, sun-drenched flooded grasslands and spring-fed pools of Shan State, eastern Myanmar — interestingly, the same highland region that produces the Celestial Pearl Danio and Fireline Danio. The habitat is clear, warm, and relatively still to gently flowing with heavy plant cover. This is not a fast-water hillstream fish — it needs gentle flow and dense planting.

The Rosy Loach is highly sociable and should be kept in large groups (10+). It exhibits sophisticated schooling behavior and a social hierarchy where each individual constantly strives to be the leader of the school by swimming to the front — while this may look like aggression, it involves no real fighting and results in exceptional activity and coloration. Compatible with other nano species — CPDs, small rasboras, Sparkling Gouramis. Avoid any larger or boisterous fish.

The Rosy Loach is the loach for nano planted tanks — genuinely nano in scale, diurnal, boldly colored, and with social behavior that keeps the whole group constantly animated. It shares its native Shan State habitat with the Celestial Pearl Danio, making the two natural biotope companions.
