Gardneri Killifish

Gardneri Killifish (Fundulopanchax gardneri) is one of the most popular and widely kept killifish in the hobby — often recommended as the ideal first killifish for its hardiness, vivid coloration, and forgiving nature. Males display a vivid blue-green iridescent body covered in red spots and dashes, with striking yellow and red fin markings. The 'P82' strain designation in the trade refers to the Pankshin 1982 collection locality — a specific population with particularly vivid coloration.

Feeding & Care Tip: Killifish are carnivores that thrive on a varied diet of frozen and freeze-dried foods. Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Bloodworms, Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Baby Brine Shrimp, and Hikari Frozen Daphnia form the core diet — offer variety rather than relying on a single food. Hikari Micro Pellets are accepted by most killifish as a dry staple. Feed small amounts 2–3 times daily. Varied feeding is especially important for annual species given their compressed lifespan.

Native to West Africa — Nigeria and Cameroon. A semi-annual killifish from seasonal streams and pools that may occasionally dry up but not reliably every year. Eggs can be stored in a dry period but do not require it, making breeding considerably more straightforward than the true annual Nothobranchius. The P82 designation refers to the Pankshin collection locality (1982), one of the most colorful and popular populations in the hobby.

Keep one male with two or more females. Males are territorial with each other but manageable in larger, well-planted aquariums. One of the most community-compatible killifish — peaceful with other small fish that share its water requirements. Dense planting and a dark substrate produce the most vivid coloration.

Breeding is straightforward compared to annual killifish — eggs are deposited on plants, spawning mops, or fine substrate and receive no parental care. Remove eggs or fry to a separate container to prevent predation. No dry period is required — eggs can be incubated in water. Semi-annual eggs can be stored in damp peat for 4–6 weeks if desired, but can also simply be incubated in water. This flexibility makes the Gardneri one of the easiest killifish to breed.
