Hoya Polystachya was described by Blume in 1849 from Java, and is a vigorous, high-climbing vine ranging across Thailand, Singapore, West Java, Malaysia, and northern Sumatra. Modern taxonomy treats it as closely allied with — and by some authorities synonymous with — the widespread Hoya latifolia, though it continues to be grown and traded under its own name.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: This is a genuinely vigorous climber — give it a pole, trellis, or other support and expect it to cover ground quickly once established.
Its flowering habit is unusual for Hoya: flower stalks form at leafless nodes rather than alongside foliage, and individual flowers within an umbel open at different times rather than all at once, so a single plant can be in bloom nearly year-round. Umbels carry as many as 60 small, dull brown to brownish-pink flowers with a white corona and yellow center, each lasting about a week and releasing a fragrance often compared to fresh grated coconut.
Give it bright indirect light, a well-draining mix, and a sturdy support to climb — a rewarding, nearly continuously flowering species for growers with the space to let it run.
