Description

Hoya Latifolia

Hoya Latifolia was described by G. Don and ranges from Myanmar through western Malesia, growing as a climbing epiphyte or lithophyte. It's best known for its enormous, thick, coriaceous leaves — ovate to oblong, three- to five-nerved from the base, reaching up to 30 x 20 cm in the largest specimens, which have earned it the nickname "dinner plate plant." It's classified as endangered in Singapore, one of several localities at the edge of its native range.

Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.

Care tip: This species needs consistent warmth to grow well — it's not especially difficult, but it will stall if kept too cool, so keep it away from cold drafts.

Clusters of light pink, star-shaped flowers appear on mature plants, each bloom lasting several days in dense, firework-like umbels. Give it a large pot with ample drainage, a stake or trellis to climb, and bright but indirect to semi-shaded light. Note that Hoya Latifolia is frequently confused in the trade with the closely related Hoya macrophylla — many plants sold under variegated trade names like "Pot of Gold" turn out, botanically, to be this species rather than macrophylla.

For collectors who want scale — genuinely oversized leaves paired with a delicate, fireworks-like flower display — this remains one of the most visually striking large-leaved Hoya available.
