Description
Hoya Kerii
Hoya Kerii, commonly known as the Sweetheart Hoya, was first collected in 1911 by Irish physician and botanist Arthur Francis George Kerr in northern Thailand and later described by William Grant Craib, who named it in Kerr's honor. It's an epiphytic climber found across Thailand, Java, and southern China, best known for its thick, succulent, obcordate (inverse heart-shaped) leaves.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: A single unrooted leaf cutting (the classic "single heart" sold around Valentine's Day) will stay alive but will not produce new growth — for a plant that actually grows and vines, you need a cutting with at least one stem node and two leaves.
This species is genuinely slow to establish — it's common for a newly potted plant to sit dormant for several months before settling in and beginning steady growth. Vines are notably thick and stiff compared to most Hoya, which makes them a little trickier to train around a curved trellis; better to let them grow straight if trellising. Mature plants produce fragrant clusters of creamy white, star-shaped flowers with russet centers.
One of the most recognizable Hoya in cultivation thanks to its heart-shaped leaves, and a genuinely rewarding long-term houseplant once it gets past its initial slow start.
