Description
Hoya Imperialis
Hoya Imperialis was described by Lindley in 1846 — famously calling it "the most noble climbing plant we have ever seen" — and is native to Java, Sumatra, Borneo, Peninsular Malaysia, and Thailand, where it climbs and rambles as a robust epiphyte, often found in leaf litter and along coastal trees, including the heath forests of Belitung Island.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: This species produces some of the single largest flowers in the entire genus — up to 4 inches (10 cm) across — but isn't always a fast bloomer; patience through the first couple of years pays off.
Thick, glossy, wavy-margined leaves support umbels of up to 12 waxy flowers, ranging in color from deep purplish-brown to rusty red or pink, always crowned with a contrasting creamy-white to pale yellow corona. Blooms last up to two weeks and carry a light evening fragrance often compared to cinnamon or honey. Give it bright indirect light, a well-draining mix, and a trellis to climb, and let it grow slightly root-bound — it doesn't need frequent repotting.
Few Hoya deliver quite this much drama per bloom — for collectors chasing the biggest, boldest flowers the genus has to offer, this remains one of the standard-bearers nearly two centuries after its original description.
