Description
Hoya Caudata
Hoya Caudata was described by Hooker in 1883 and ranges across Borneo, Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, and Thailand, historically also recorded in Singapore, where it's now critically endangered. Rather than climbing high into the canopy like many relatives, it often scrambles low — through leaf litter on the forest floor, over fallen trunks, or on limestone hills — with thin, wiry stems anchored by adventitious roots. The species name, meaning "tailed," refers to the long pointed anther appendages of the flower.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: Bright light brings out a deep red flush in the otherwise green foliage — but avoid harsh direct sun, which will scorch rather than color the leaves.
Mature leaves are thick, leathery, and rough to the touch, ovate and ending in a sharp point. Fuzzy, star-shaped flowers with white petals and a dark red corona appear on established plants but last only a day or two — a fleeting but memorable bloom. Give it bright indirect light, a well-draining chunky mix, and let it dry between waterings; this trade lot is offered under the locality/trade name "Getah Bening," referring to its clear latex.
Its ground-scrambling habit in the wild sets it apart from the classic image of a Hoya climbing high into a tree canopy — a reminder of just how varied growth habits are across the genus.
