Description
Hoya Callistophylla
Hoya Callistophylla was described by T. Green in 2000 and is native to Sarawak, Borneo, growing as an epiphytic or lithophytic liana in lowland tropical forest. Its name — from the Greek kallos ("beauty") and phyllon ("leaf") — points straight at its main appeal: long, leathery, oblong leaves in pale lime to olive green, marked with dramatic, almost black branching veins that stand out in sharp relief against the lighter background.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: Vein contrast develops best under bright, indirect light — insufficient light is the most common reason the dramatic dark veining fails to develop fully.
This is a foliage-first Hoya — it rarely flowers indoors, but its slightly puckered (bullate), sculptural leaf surface and bold venation make it a standout even without blooms. Give it a trellis or frame to climb, an airy, well-draining epiphyte mix, and let the top of the substrate dry before watering again; overwatering combined with poor drainage is the main risk with this species.
One of the more sought-after foliage Hoya on the collector market, prized specifically for leaf texture and pattern over flowers — a true "grown for the leaves" species in a genus more often admired for its blooms.
