Description
Homalomena Humilis Red
Homalomena Humilis is native across Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, Java, and Borneo, growing as a deciduous herb reaching over a meter in the wild, rising from a stoloniferous tuber with a green, grey-and-pink mottled pseudostem. This "Red" form shows the species' characteristic arrowhead-shaped leaves with warm reddish tones, in a genus generally recognized by its strong anise-like scent when cut.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: In parts of its native range this species grows epiphytically on tree trunks — a well-draining, chunky mix that avoids waterlogging serves it well even when grown terrestrially in a pot.
Give it bright light a few feet from a sunny window, water when the top couple inches of soil are dry, and mist regularly to keep humidity high around the foliage. Indoors it stays compact, typically under 12 inches tall and wide, with leaves emerging upright before arching gracefully outward as they mature.
A widespread, variable species across Southeast Asia with a long list of botanical synonyms reflecting just how much natural variation exists — this red-toned form is a compact, manageable way to bring that diversity into a collection.
