Upside Down Catfish

Upside Down Catfish (Synodontis nigriventris) is one of the most characterful and entertaining catfish available — and the reason for its name is exactly what you'd expect. This small mochokid swims and rests habitually inverted, belly-up, as its normal posture. The underside is darker than the back — the reverse of the typical countershading pattern in fish — an adaptation that makes the inverted fish less visible to predators from above.

Feeding & Care Tip: Hikari Sinking Wafers and Hikari Mini Algae Wafers make excellent staples. Supplement with Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Bloodworms and Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Brine Shrimp 2–3 times per week — feed after lights dim as this species is most active at dusk and night. Provide driftwood and caves; this species grazes on submerged wood surfaces from below.

Native to rivers and streams of the Congo River basin in Central Africa — the Democratic Republic of Congo and surrounding regions. Inhabits slow-moving water with submerged wood and roots where it clings to the underside of surfaces. The inverted swimming posture evolved to allow the fish to feed from the underside of submerged wood and leaves — a behavior it continues in the aquarium with great regularity.

Keep in groups of three or more. Upside Down Catfish are more active and visible in company. They are completely peaceful and suitable for community aquariums with peaceful to moderately active fish. Provide caves and driftwood with horizontal surfaces they can cling to from below — this is not just decoration but functional habitat for a fish that spends much of its life inverted against surfaces.

One of the most reliably entertaining fish in the hobby — the inverted posture never fails to catch the attention of visitors and new aquarists. Hardy, peaceful, long-lived, and genuinely unusual, the Upside Down Catfish is an excellent addition to any community aquarium with a West/Central African or general tropical theme.
