Twig Catfish

Twig Catfish (Farlowella vittata) is one of the most astonishing examples of camouflage in the freshwater hobby. The body is elongated to an extreme degree — thin, straight, brown, and completely twig-like — with a long rostral projection extending the snout into a point. Motionless against a piece of wood or a plant stem, a Twig Catfish is essentially invisible. It is a specialist fish that rewards patient, experienced aquarists with one of nature's most extraordinary disguises.

Feeding & Care Tip: Hikari Mini Algae Wafers placed directly on driftwood surfaces are the ideal staple — Twig Catfish rasp algae and biofilm from wood continuously. Supplement with blanched zucchini or cucumber attached to wood surfaces, and {SSW} placed near resting spots. Driftwood with established algae and biofilm growth is essential — these fish will decline without it.

Native to slow-moving rivers and flooded forest areas of Venezuela, Colombia, and Trinidad. Inhabits submerged wood, roots, and plant stems in clear, soft, slightly acidic water. The twig-like body shape is a genuine evolutionary adaptation for camouflage against woody debris — the fish exploits this disguise by remaining motionless for long periods, moving only slowly and deliberately.

Requires excellent water quality and very gentle filtration — Twig Catfish are sensitive to nitrates and do poorly in mature tanks with high organic loads. Regular partial water changes are important. They are completely peaceful and non-competitive — keep only with other small, gentle species that will not steal food or cause stress. Do not keep with boisterous fish.

Males develop bristle-like odontodes along the snout when in breeding condition. They are cave/surface spawners; males guard and fan the eggs. The Twig Catfish is a fish that requires commitment — the water quality demands are real — but the reward is one of the most extraordinary-looking fish in the freshwater hobby.
