Sunset Dwarf Rainbow

Sunset Dwarf Rainbow (Melanotaenia parva) is one of the most beautiful dwarf rainbowfish available. Males develop a stunning warm palette — golden-orange to deep red body tones with iridescent highlights — that recalls the colors of a sunset. The species name parva means 'small,' reflecting its compact size. It is IUCN Vulnerable and endemic to Lake Kurumoi in West Papua.

Feeding & Care Tip: Hikari Micro Pellets make an excellent daily staple — soak and crush for juveniles. Supplement 2–3× per week with Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Bloodworms or Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Baby Brine Shrimp to develop the full sunset coloration. Feed small amounts 2–3 times daily.

Native exclusively to Lake Kurumoi in the Bird's Head Peninsula of West Papua, Indonesia — one of the most restricted ranges of any Melanotaenia. IUCN Vulnerable. The lake water is moderately soft and slightly acidic, reflecting local drainage conditions. Aquarium populations play an important role in conservation.

Keep in groups of at least six with mixed sexes. Males display beautifully to one another with color intensification. Completely peaceful with other small to medium community fish. Its small size makes it suitable for aquariums too small for most other Melanotaenia.

One of the most captivating behaviors of rainbowfish is the male display flash — in good light, males develop a brilliant iridescent stripe along the dorsal ridge that they can switch on and off almost instantaneously when competing for female attention. A tank with multiple males and adequate females produces near-constant display behavior, making this one of the most dynamic and entertaining fish in the planted aquarium hobby.
