Silver Cichlid
Silver Cichlid (Vieja argentea) is a large and impressive Central American cichlid from Mexico. The silver to pale grey body has subtle iridescent scaling that shifts in good light, and adults develop a distinctive robust, deep-bodied profile. This is a big, powerful cichlid that needs space and robust tankmates — not a community fish in the typical sense.
Feeding & Care Tip: Hikari Cichlid Bio-Gold is the ideal staple — Hikari Micro Pellets as backup. Supplement 2–3× per week with Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Bloodworms. Feed substantial amounts 2–3 times daily — this is a large, active fish with a correspondingly large appetite.
The Silver Cichlid requires a large aquarium — at minimum 75 gallons for a pair. It appreciates robust decor that can withstand rearrangement — this species is a digger and will redecorate the tank regularly. Good filtration is essential given its size.
Keep as a pair or with other large, robust Central American cichlids. Territorial and can be aggressive, particularly during spawning. Choose tankmates carefully — only fish of similar size and temperament are appropriate.
Native to the Grijalva-Usumacinta river system in Mexico. Note: this is a Central American cichlid rather than an African species. It inhabits large, slow-moving rivers and lakes with hard, alkaline water. A rewarding long-term project for experienced cichlid keepers.
