Royal Farlowella Catfish

Royal Farlowella Catfish (Sturisoma panamense) is the larger, more robust relative of the Twig Catfish — sharing the same extraordinary elongated, twig-like body form but growing considerably larger and being somewhat more forgiving in terms of water quality. The body has warm brown tones with darker markings and the characteristic long rostral extension, and males develop attractive cheek bristles. It is one of the most impressive and unusual loricariid catfish available.

Feeding & Care Tip: Hikari Mini Algae Wafers placed on driftwood and rock surfaces are the ideal staple — position them where the fish already rests. Supplement with blanched zucchini or cucumber, and Hikari Sinking Wafers. Driftwood with natural biofilm and algae growth is strongly recommended as a permanent feeding surface.

Native to rivers and streams of Panama and Colombia — clear, moderately flowing water with submerged wood and abundant algae and biofilm growth. Sturisoma panamense is more adaptable to varied water conditions than the true Farlowella species, making it a more practical choice for aquarists wanting the twig catfish experience with greater hardiness.

Males develop prominent cheek odontodes — impressive bristle-like projections along the sides of the face — when mature, making sexing straightforward. Cave/surface spawner; the male guards and fans the eggs. Keep as a pair or in a small group with adequate territory. Compatible with most peaceful community fish that will not compete aggressively for food.

The Royal Farlowella is a genuinely impressive fish — at up to 10 inches it creates a real visual impact in a planted aquarium, and the twig-like body resting motionless against driftwood is a spectacular camouflage display. More accessible than the true Farlowella but still a rewarding specialist species.
