Red Picta Guppy

Red Picta Guppy (Micropoecilia picta) is not a true guppy at all — it is a distinct and closely related species sometimes called the Swamp Guppy or Scarlet Livebearer. Males are tiny jewels: vivid scarlet-red and black spotted coloration on a compact body barely larger than a thumbnail. Wild fish are found in brackish coastal environments alongside the common guppy, but the Red Picta has its own distinct personality and care requirements.

Feeding & Care Tip: Hikari Fancy Guppy pellets crushed very fine and Sera Guppy Granules make good staples. Supplement 2–3× per week with Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Baby Brine Shrimp and Hikari Frozen Daphnia — small frozen foods are important for this tiny fish. Feed very small amounts multiple times daily. Hard, alkaline water or a small amount of aquarium salt (1 tsp per 10 gallons) supports long-term health.

Native to coastal rivers, swamps, and estuaries of Trinidad, Venezuela, and surrounding northeast South America — often found in brackish water with common guppies. Males reach barely 18mm; females are slightly larger. An important behavioral note: unlike common guppies, M. picta does not breed true for color — the red color gene is not Y-linked, so females will produce non-colored male offspring even when mated to vivid red males.

Keep in groups with more females than males. A small amount of aquarium salt (1–2 teaspoons per 10 gallons) is optional but can benefit fish from brackish origins. Compatible with other small, peaceful species tolerant of hard, slightly alkaline water. Do not keep with boisterous or larger fish.

The Red Picta Guppy is genuinely different from P. reticulata — a separate species with its own genetics, brackish tolerance, and distinct personality. For aquarists who enjoy the guppy family but want something genuinely unusual, it is a rewarding and fascinating find.
