Pearl Danio

Pearl Danio (Danio albolineatus) is a subtly beautiful and underappreciated species — less flashy than the Zebra Danio but with a soft, sophisticated iridescence that rewards close observation. The pale pinkish-silver to blue-white body has a delicate pearlescent shimmer with a fine orange-pink lateral line in males. In a group under good lighting the combined iridescence of many individuals creates a shimmering, almost glowing school.

Feeding & Care Tip: Sera Vipan Tropical Flakes and Hikari Micro Pellets make excellent daily staples. Supplement 2–3× per week with Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Bloodworms or Hikari Vibra Bites to enhance color and condition. Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Baby Brine Shrimp are an excellent additional treat. Feed small amounts 2–3 times daily. A tight-fitting lid is strongly recommended — danios are enthusiastic jumpers.

Native to Sumatra, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam — clear, fast-flowing hill streams and rivers near the surface. The Pearl Danio has a wide natural distribution that has produced local variations in coloration — some populations show more vivid pink lateral lines, others are more blue-silver. All share the same care requirements.

Keep in groups of at least eight — the iridescent shimmer effect of a proper school is one of this species' main attractions. Compatible with all peaceful community fish. An excellent dither species and one of the most rewarding danios for planted aquariums where its subtle coloration complements rather than dominates the aesthetic.

Danios are prolific and easy egg-scatterers that spawn with little encouragement in a well-maintained aquarium. Males chase females vigorously before spawning among fine-leaved plants or over the substrate. Eggs and fry receive no parental care — adults will eat eggs if given the chance. For intentional breeding, a separate shallow tank with spawning mops or fine-leaved plants, slightly warmer water, and removal of adults after spawning is straightforward and reliable.
