Longfin Leopard Danio
Longfin Leopard Danio (Danio frankei) is the longfin form of the Leopard Danio — the same pale silver-gold body with dark leopard spots, combined with dramatically extended flowing fins. The spotted pattern combined with the flowing longfin silhouette creates an elegant and eye-catching fish that moves beautifully in the water column.
Feeding & Care Tip: Sera Vipan Tropical Flakes and Hikari Micro Pellets make excellent daily staples. Supplement 2–3× per week with Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Bloodworms or Hikari Vibra Bites to enhance color and condition. Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Baby Brine Shrimp are an excellent additional treat. Feed small amounts 2–3 times daily. A tight-fitting lid is strongly recommended — danios are enthusiastic jumpers.
The longfin mutation extends all fins significantly beyond normal length. Like all longfin danio forms, this fish requires clean water and gentle flow to maintain fin integrity. The hardy, adaptable nature of D. frankei is fully retained — only the fin care requirements differ from the standard form.
Keep in groups of at least five. The flowing fins are attractive to fin-nippers — do not keep with Tiger Barbs, serpae tetras, or any known fin-nipping species. Can be schooled with standard Leopard Danios or Zebra Danios.
Danios are prolific and easy egg-scatterers that spawn with little encouragement in a well-maintained aquarium. Males chase females vigorously before spawning among fine-leaved plants or over the substrate. Eggs and fry receive no parental care — adults will eat eggs if given the chance. For intentional breeding, a separate shallow tank with spawning mops or fine-leaved plants, slightly warmer water, and removal of adults after spawning is straightforward and reliable. Will interbreed with other Danio rerio forms and Danio frankei. The longfin trait is dominant.
