Jae Barb
Jae Barb (Barbus jae) is a tiny and exquisite West African nano barb — a genuine jewel of the freshwater hobby from the forest streams of Cameroon and surrounding regions. Males develop vivid red to orange-red coloration with dark lateral markings on a compact, almost oval body. At under an inch, the Jae Barb is one of the smallest barbs available, comparable in scale to the Boraras rasboras of Southeast Asia.
Feeding & Care Tip: Hikari Micro Pellets (crush or soak well) and Sera Vipan Baby make excellent daily staples for this tiny species. Supplement 2–3× per week with Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Baby Brine Shrimp or Hikari Vibra Bites. Feed very small amounts multiple times daily. Food particle size matters for this nano fish.
Native to slow-moving forest streams and swamps of Central and West Africa — Cameroon, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, and the Republic of Congo. This species inhabits soft, slightly acidic, tannin-stained blackwater with dense vegetation and leaf litter. Indian almond leaves and dark substrate are beneficial.
Keep in groups of at least eight — the small size and timid nature of this species means it genuinely needs numbers to feel secure and display confidently. Keep only with other very small, peaceful species. An excellent companion for small African tetras and West African dwarf cichlids like Kribensis in a West African biotope setup.
Egg-scatterer. The Jae Barb is one of the most unusual barbs available — a West African nano species in a group dominated by Asian fish. Its vivid red male coloration and tiny size make it a natural companion for the nano planted tank, and its African origin adds genuine biogeographic interest to a collection.
