Galaxy Woodcat

Galaxy Woodcat (Tatia musaica) is a spectacular and uncommonly available small catfish from the Amazon basin with a pattern that fully justifies the 'galaxy' name — the dark body is covered with a dense scattering of small white to cream spots creating a starfield effect across the flanks. It belongs to the Auchenipteridae family — the 'woodcats' — a group of nocturnal, cave-dwelling South American catfish with a distinctive robust, somewhat wedge-shaped body profile.

Feeding & Care Tip: Hikari Micro Pellets and Hikari Sinking Wafers make excellent staples — feed after lights out when this nocturnal species is active. Supplement with Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Bloodworms 2–3 times per week. Provide tight-fitting caves or PVC tubes; this species spends virtually all daylight hours inside a shelter.

Native to the Amazon and Orinoco basins — specifically recorded from Venezuela and Colombia. Tatia musaica was formally described only in 2009, though it had been appearing in the aquarium trade for several years before that. Inhabits slow-moving streams and flooded forest areas with abundant woody debris and leaf litter. Strictly nocturnal in nature.

An interesting behavior unique to the Auchenipteridae: internal fertilization. Males have a modified anal fin used to transfer sperm to females, which can store sperm and spawn multiple times from a single mating. This makes accidental breeding in the aquarium possible if a male and female are present. Keep singly or in small groups with adequate caves.

The Galaxy Woodcat is a fish for aquarists who appreciate the unusual — a genuinely beautiful spotted pattern, rarely seen internal fertilization behavior, and the always-entertaining personality of a fish that disappears completely during the day and emerges at night. One of the more interesting small catfish available.
