Fireline Danio
Fireline Danio (Devario sondhii) is a striking and relatively recently introduced danio that entered the hobby after Myanmar began opening up trade with the world in the early 2010s. The shimmering silver body is marked by a vivid red-orange to fiery stripe on the lower posterior half of the body and a distinctive dark spot behind the gill plate — the 'cleithral spot' that is a useful identification mark. Lively, hardy, and gregarious, it makes an excellent schooling fish for planted aquariums.
Feeding & Care Tip: Sera Vipan Tropical Flakes and Hikari Micro Pellets make excellent daily staples. Supplement 2–3× per week with Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Bloodworms or Hikari Vibra Bites to enhance color and condition. Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Baby Brine Shrimp are an excellent additional treat. Feed small amounts 2–3 times daily. A tight-fitting lid is strongly recommended — danios are enthusiastic jumpers.
Native to the Southern Shan States of Myanmar — notably, this species' type locality is the same area where Danio margaritatus (Celestial Pearl Danio) was discovered. The two species share highland Shan State habitats and can be kept together naturally. Inhabits slow to moderately flowing streams and ponds with dense vegetation.
Keep in groups of at least eight — ten or more recommended for the most natural social behavior. The Fireline Danio is active and fast-moving; avoid keeping with very small or timid species. An excellent companion for the Celestial Pearl Danio given their shared natural habitat. A tight-fitting lid is particularly important — this species is a confirmed and enthusiastic jumper.
Danios are prolific and easy egg-scatterers that spawn with little encouragement in a well-maintained aquarium. Males chase females vigorously before spawning among fine-leaved plants or over the substrate. Eggs and fry receive no parental care — adults will eat eggs if given the chance. For intentional breeding, a separate shallow tank with spawning mops or fine-leaved plants, slightly warmer water, and removal of adults after spawning is straightforward and reliable. A prolific and rapid breeder — fry have a notably fast growth rate and reach breeding size within three months. The Fireline Danio is a beginner-friendly introduction to Devario species, sharing the same hardiness as the Giant Danio in a more manageable size.
