Fire Ring Danio
Fire Ring Danio (Danio kyathit) displays the 'fire ring' color morph — the dark vertical bars on the silver body each bear a vivid orange to red-orange ring or halo, creating a bold, graphic pattern of orange-ringed bars that glows against the silver background. It is one of two color morphs of D. kyathit kept in the hobby, the other being the Orange Fin Danio. Danio kyathit is a small, active danio from Myanmar with a compact body and the bold, fast-moving personality characteristic of the group. The species name kyathit is the Burmese word for 'leopard.'
Feeding & Care Tip: Hikari Micro Pellets crushed or soaked briefly and Sera Vipan Baby make excellent daily staples for this nano species. Supplement 2–3× per week with Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Baby Brine Shrimp or Hikari Frozen Daphnia — small particle size matters. Feed small amounts multiple times daily. A tight-fitting lid is essential — nano danios are active jumpers despite their small size.
Native to clear, fast-flowing streams in the Myitkyina area of Kachin State, northern Myanmar — the same biodiverse highland region that produces the Gold Ring Danio and Glowlight Danio. Inhabits small rocky streams with moderate flow and abundant vegetation.
Keep in groups of at least eight. The two color morphs of D. kyathit — Fire Ring and Orange Fin — can be mixed in a single school where the different pattern expressions create an attractive mixed display. Compatible with other small, peaceful nano species.
Danios are prolific and easy egg-scatterers that spawn with little encouragement in a well-maintained aquarium. Males chase females vigorously before spawning among fine-leaved plants or over the substrate. Eggs and fry receive no parental care — adults will eat eggs if given the chance. For intentional breeding, a separate shallow tank with spawning mops or fine-leaved plants, slightly warmer water, and removal of adults after spawning is straightforward and reliable.
