Featherfin Squeaker Catfish
Featherfin Squeaker Catfish (Synodontis eupterus) is one of the most impressive Synodontis species available — and one of the most dramatic-looking catfish in the hobby. The common name describes both the spectacular elongated, feather-like dorsal fin rays of adults and the audible squeaking sound the fish produces by rubbing its pectoral fin spines in their sockets — a sound clearly audible to anyone in the room.
Feeding & Care Tip: Hikari Sinking Wafers and Hikari Mini Algae Wafers make excellent staples — feed after lights out when most active. Supplement with Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Bloodworms and Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Brine Shrimp 2–3 times per week. Provide large caves — this fish grows substantial and needs shelter sized for an adult.
Native to river systems across West and Central Africa — Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad, and the upper Nile drainage. Inhabits rivers and streams with rocky or sandy substrate and submerged wood. The feathered dorsal fin rays are most developed in mature males and create an extraordinary silhouette in the aquarium.
Keep singly or in small groups in a larger aquarium — can be territorial with conspecifics. At up to 8 inches this is a substantial fish that needs space. Compatible with medium to large African cichlids, larger tetras, and other robust community fish. The squeaking sound intensifies when the fish is startled or handled.
The Featherfin Squeaker is one of the most spectacular catfish available at a manageable size — the elaborate dorsal fin, bold spotted pattern, and audible personality make it a genuine centerpiece fish. Plan for its adult size and provide appropriate space.
