Chameleon Whiptail Catfish

Chameleon Whiptail Catfish (Pseudohemiodon apithanos) is one of the most extraordinary-looking loricariid catfish available. The extremely flat, wide body profile — almost perfectly disc-like when viewed from above — combined with a pointed rostrum and long caudal filaments creates a fish that truly looks prehistoric. The 'chameleon' name comes from the fish's ability to rapidly change between light and dark body patterns to match the substrate it rests on — an active camouflage ability that is remarkable to observe.

Feeding & Care Tip: Hikari Mini Algae Wafers placed flat on the substrate surface are the best staple. Supplement with blanched zucchini or cucumber slices laid flat on the sand. Hikari Sinking Wafers and Sera Vipachips Tropical Wafers provide additional nutrition. Fine, smooth sand substrate is essential — this fish spends its life resting flat on and burrowing into sand.

Native to the sandy-bottomed slow-moving rivers of Ecuador and Peru — the upper Amazon drainage. Inhabits shallow, clear, slow-moving water with fine sand substrate and sparse vegetation. The extremely flat body and active color-changing ability are adaptations for camouflage against sand. In the aquarium, the color-changing behavior is frequently triggered by changes in substrate color — provide light-colored sand to observe the full range of pattern variation.

Keep singly or in pairs — males can be territorial. This species requires a dedicated sandy area of substrate that remains undisturbed — do not keep with cichlids or other fish that dig extensively. Compatible with peaceful mid and upper water species that will not disturb the bottom.

The Chameleon Whiptail is a specialist fish for the aquarist who appreciates unusual loricariid catfish with extraordinary adaptations. The active color change is visible in real time — watching a fish shift between pale and dark within seconds as it moves between substrate types is genuinely astonishing.
