Seachem Tidal HOB Filters

The Seachem Tidal is widely regarded as one of the best hang-on-back filters available — a thoughtfully engineered HOB that solves the usual complaints about the category. Rather than a flimsy slot for a disposable cartridge, it gives you a large, open media basket you fill with whatever media you choose, so you control your own mechanical, chemical, and biological filtration. A self-priming pump, a maintenance-reminder indicator, and genuinely quiet operation round out a filter built to be lived with.

Good to Know — standout features: Two details set the Tidal apart. It has an adjustable surface skimmer that pulls the oily protein film off the water's surface (great for gas exchange and crystal-clear photos), and a precise flow-control knob to tune the current — a real benefit for nano fish, bettas, and shrimp that dislike strong flow. The large media basket also means you can load it with high-quality media like Seachem Matrix and Purigen instead of being locked into proprietary cartridges.

A Note for Planted Tanks: Like all hang-on-back filters, this one returns water as a small waterfall, and that surface agitation off-gasses CO₂. In a low-tech or nano planted tank that's a plus — it keeps oxygen levels healthy. But if you inject pressurized CO₂ in a high-tech aquascape, that same agitation drives your CO₂ back out of the water, making it harder and costlier to hold a stable level. For serious injected scapes a canister with a spray bar or lily pipe is usually preferred; a HOB like this shines in low- and medium-tech planted tanks, nano setups, and fish- or shrimp-focused aquariums.

Choosing Your Size: The model number is its tank rating in gallons — the Tidal 35 for tanks up to ~35 gallons, the 55 up to ~55 gallons, and the 75 up to ~75 gallons. When in doubt, size up and use the flow knob to throttle back; a larger filter run gently gives you more media capacity and a cleaner tank than a small one run flat-out.

Setup & Maintenance: Hang it, fill the body, and the self-priming pump starts the flow at the push of a button — no manual siphon needed. The built-in indicator gradually advances to remind you when a rinse is due; clean the sponge and media in old tank water (never tap water) to protect your bacteria, and stagger media changes so you never replace everything at once. Tip the skimmer intake up or down to balance surface skimming against deeper water intake.
