Description

Tan Wood is a dense, highly textured wood with a rich reddish-brown color that offers various forms and protrusions, adding visual interest and natural complexity to your habitat. Each piece of Tan Wood is unique in form and color, making it a stunning addition to any aquarium, paludarium, or terrarium.

Tan Wood's dense, heavily textured surface makes it an excellent support for epiphytic plants, mosses, and aquatic ferns, while its rich coloration provides warm, earthy tones that pair beautifully with both light and dark substrates. Its structural density gives it excellent stability in hardscape compositions. Whether used as a bold focal point or as part of a complex, multi-piece layout, Tan Wood adds genuine natural character and depth to any scape.

Key Points

  • Color: Rich reddish-brown with warm earthy tones
  • Texture: Dense, highly textured surface with varied forms and protrusions
  • Plant Ready: Excellent anchoring surface for mosses, ferns, and epiphytic plants
  • Structural Stability: Dense wood provides excellent support in hardscape compositions
  • Versatile: Ideal for aquariums, paludariums, and terrariums
  • Packaging: Sold by piece — available in Small (S), Medium (M), and Large (L)
  • Origin: Naturally aged and untreated

Preparation & Curing

  • Curing Required: Natural wood should be cured before introduction into aquariums or terrariums
  • Basic Curing (new setups or small loads): Soak in warm water for 24 hours; rinse thoroughly before use
  • Intensive Curing (established aquariums with livestock): Boil for 30–60 minutes to eliminate potential contaminants; follow with daily soaking in fresh water until it runs clear
  • Gradual Introduction: Introduce slowly to monitor potential water chemistry changes; start with small pieces if uncertain

Initial Buoyancy

  • Wood may float initially — soak for up to a month or secure temporarily using rocks, anchors, or WIO ScapeGlue until fully waterlogged

Water Monitoring

  • Wood releases tannins that may tint water a warm amber tone — harmless and even beneficial, minimized with pre-soaking or boiling
  • Maintain kH ≥ 3 for a stable buffer and monitor pH regularly
  • Test pH, kH, and gH weekly during initial setup
  • Perform partial water changes as needed to manage coloration
  • Biofilm or saprolegnia may appear early on — this is natural and harmless; remove manually if desired, it will subside over time
