Description
Striped Wood — extremely rare driftwood with natural striped texture and flowing branches, ideal for striking ryoboku-style aquascapes and biotope environments.
Striped Wood is a true gem among aquascaping woods — highly sought after for its scarcity and distinctive striped surface textures. Each piece offers a thick, sturdy base root paired with elegantly flowing branches, making it an exceptional choice for expressive ryoboku-style layouts or complex biotope setups. Its dense structure adds stability, making it perfect for anchoring hardscape compositions.
Unlike many natural woods, Striped Wood releases little to no tannins, allowing you to enjoy crystal-clear water from day one without the typical discoloration or water-conditioning concerns. Each piece is naturally unique, ensuring no two scapes will ever be the same.
The WIO difference: We select only naturally lake-aged striped woods, responsibly sourced and curated for artistic and ecological balance.
Key Points
- Extremely Rare: Sourced in limited quantities due to its natural scarcity
- Striped Texture: Unique striped patterning adds visual interest and contrast
- Dynamic Form: Thick base and flowing branches allow expressive ryoboku formations
- Tannin-Free: Releases minimal tannins for crystal-clear water
- Natural Stability: Heavy wood offers excellent structural support in aquascapes
- Versatile: Ideal for aquariums, paludariums, and terrariums
- Packaging: Sold by piece — available in Small (S), Medium (M), and Large (L)
- Origin: Responsibly collected, nature-aged, and untreated
Preparation & Curing
- Curing Required: Natural wood should be cured before introduction into aquariums or terrariums
- Basic Curing (new setups or small loads): Soak in warm water for 24 hours; rinse thoroughly before use
- Intensive Curing (established aquariums with livestock): Boil for 30–60 minutes to eliminate potential contaminants; follow with daily soaking in fresh water until it runs clear
- Gradual Introduction: Introduce slowly to monitor potential water chemistry changes; start with small pieces if uncertain
Initial Buoyancy
- Wood may float initially — soak for up to a month or secure temporarily using rocks, anchors, or WIO ScapeGlue until fully waterlogged
Water Monitoring
- Releases little to no tannins — enjoy crystal-clear water from day one
- May still subtly influence pH; maintain kH ≥ 3 for a stable buffer
- Test pH, kH, and gH weekly during the first few weeks
- Biofilm formation is natural and beneficial — it will diminish over time or can be removed manually
Placement
- Highlight its natural flow: position so its curves and branches lead the eye across your layout
- Place diagonally or partially embedded in substrate for a more organic feel
- Combine multiple pieces for layered, naturalistic compositions
