Patrick's Rasbora
Patrick's Rasbora
Patrick's Rasbora (Rasbora patrickyapi) is a rarely imported and collector-grade rasbora from the blackwater peat swamps of Indonesian Borneo — described in 2009 by Dr. Tan Heok Hui of the Raffles Museum of Biodiversity Research. Named for Patrick Yap Boon Hiang, described in the formal description as 'a long-time supporter of the museum and freshwater fish enthusiast and exporter, who has generously donated much fish material for the author's research.' Listed as Near Threatened by the IUCN.
Feeding & Care Tip: Sera Vipan Tropical Flakes and Hikari Micro Pellets make excellent daily staples. Supplement 2–3× per week with Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Baby Brine Shrimp, Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Tubifex Worms, or Hikari Vibra Bites. Feed small amounts 2–3 times daily.
Native to the Katingan and Kahayan river basins of Indonesian Borneo — blackwater peat swamp habitats with soft, acidic, tannin-stained water. Very rarely imported — most specimens in the hobby originate from specialist collectors and importers. A moderately large rasbora for a peat swamp species, reaching up to 2.2 inches.
Keep in groups of at least 8. Blackwater conditions with soft, slightly acidic water and tannin additions produce the best coloration. Compatible with peaceful community fish of similar size.
A collector find from Borneo — the personal naming story and Near Threatened IUCN status add significance to keeping and potentially breeding this species.
