Papua Blueberry Snail

Papua Blueberry Snail (Notopala sp.) is one of the most visually extraordinary freshwater snails available — and one of the newest to the hobby. The body (foot and head) is deeply pigmented blue-to-purple, heavily speckled with bright orange or yellow spots, creating a color combination that has no equivalent in freshwater aquariums. The shell is a rich reddish-brown to dark maroon. This is a genuine collector's animal — rare, spectacular, and still relatively unknown outside dedicated invertebrate circles.
Native to the rivers and streams of Papua (Indonesian New Guinea) — clear, moderately flowing tropical water with oxygenated conditions. Unlike most aquarium snails that are purely benthic grazers, Papua Blueberry Snails are also filter feeders — they draw suspended microorganisms and organic particles from the water column as well as grazing on surfaces. This dual feeding strategy makes them somewhat more demanding to feed than standard grazing snails, but also means they actively contribute to water clarity. They are livebearers and reproduce slowly — no population explosion risk.
The Papua Blueberry Snail is still being studied taxonomically — sold under Notopala sp. and sometimes Viviparus sp., it represents a relatively recently discovered species whose full scientific description is not yet complete. It shares its natural habitat with Cherax freshwater crustaceans. For dedicated invertebrate keepers, it is a standout centerpiece animal unlike anything else in the freshwater hobby.
